Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

LLM Degree is generally limited to persons holding a 4-year law degree. All prospective applicants whose home language is not English must have obtained a certain level of proficiency in English.

English Profiency

All teaching and assessment in the Faculty of Law is conducted in English. Therefore, all prospective applicants must have obtained a certain level of proficiency in English and they may be requested to submit evidence of su ch proficiency as part of their application to study in the Faculty of Law. This evidence could take the form of:

  • a recent score (obtained within 3 - 5 years before application for admission) of at least 570 (paper-based test) or 230 (computer-based test) or 88 (internet- based test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL);or
  • a recent overall band score of 7.0 (with no individual element of the test scoring below 6.0) on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • a score of at least 65% on the University\'s Placement Test in English for Educational Purposes (PTEEP); or
  • Proof of schooling, where the medium of study is English.

All prospective applicants whose home language is not English should therefore anticipate such a request and submit evidence of such proficiency together with their application. If you have received the results of any of the above English proficiency tests at the time of posting your application, it can be forwarded up to 6 weeks before the commencement of your studies at UCT. Upon arrival, should it become evident that the student if not proficient in English, the Law Faculty reserves the right to cancel the student\'s registration.
