Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Admission Requirements:
  • Baccalaureate Degree: A baccalaureate degree is required. Students must present evidence that such a degree will be awarded by the time they begin graduate work. A final transcript is also required prior to registration.
  • Cumulative Grade Point Average: A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (or its foreign equivalent) on a four-point scale. If you have attended graduate school and obtained a master\'s degree, and the GPA is over 3.00, then the GPA of the undergraduate school can be below 3.00 for regular admission.
  • Letter of Recommendation: Letters of recommendation from three former instructors are required.
  • Graduate Record Examination: There is no subject test for linguistics; the general test is all that is required. Please have the testing service send a copy of your score to the Linguistics Department.
  • Foreign Language Requirement: Proficiency in a foreign language equivalent to two years of college work is required.
  • Writing Sample: The writing sample should be a short paper written for a previous course taken in linguistics, or if that is not available, a paper on any subject is acceptable.
