Program Curriculum
Course Structure
- In semester one you will take Advanced Arabic G which consists of ten hours of classes per week. Lesson content includes contemporary literature, print and audio-visual media, and dynamic class activities, discussions and debates.
- In the second semester you will continue your Arabic instruction in Edinburgh with Advanced Arabic H and immediately after spend six weeks in the Arab world, four weeks of which will be made up of intensive Arabic instruction in Cairo or Amman (20 hours per week) followed by two weeks working on a special project there.
- In addition to the language courses, you will also take Research Skills and Methods in IMES which will prepare you for thinking about your research project at the end of the second semester. You may also be able to take an option in Approaches to Arabic Teaching Pedagogy.
- During the summer you will do your Final Project where you will have the choice of a 15,000-word dissertation on a relevant research topic agreed with your appointed supervisor, or submit a media portfolio. This will be due by the end of August.

Minimum entry requirements
- A UK 2:1 undergraduate degree or its international equivalent.
- We expect most students will have a background in Arabic language/or Middle Eastern studies. Those who do not have a formal Arabic qualification but have a good knowledge of Arabic can also apply.
- All applicants will have to complete a rigorous and carefully calibrated Arabic assessment online before being offered a place on the programme. The level of Arabic required will be Higher Intermediate/Lower Advanced (ACTFIL) or the equivalent of B2/C1 in the Common European Framework (CEF).
English Proficiency: IELTS 7 or equivalent.
