The first year of Master in Law studies is common to all seven programmes. It offers a solid basis in EU and international law and prepares students for the second year of their Master in Law studies.

Objectives The Master is designed to offer a deepening and widening of the knowledge which students were able to acquire during their Bachelor degree. The first year is as well a necessary condition for access to further professional training in Law. It offers an ideal springboard to the world’s best specialised programmes in European law. Career perspectives The highly-specialised Master in Law programmes, taught in French and English at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, give students an excellent starting point for their careers and a competitive advantage compared to graduates from many other programmes.Upon completing their Master in Law programme (first and second year) students may also choose to pursue their academic studies with a PhD, with positions regularly available at the University of Luxembourg. To work as a lawyer in Luxembourg, unless already qualified as a lawyer in another EU member state, graduates must successfully pass the Luxembourg bar exam. This requires proficiency in several legal subjects and familiarity with the Luxembourgish language, as well as French and German. Admission Requirements
Admissions To apply for a programme at the University of Luxembourg, candidates must comply with the general eligibility criteria for the chosen programme type and be selected by the study programme based on the quality of their application. The programme at a glance – 120 ECTS Duration: 2 years / 4 sem Teaching languages: FR + EN Admissions: EU: 1 Feb 2026 – 30 Jun 2026 Non-EU: 1 Feb 2026 – 24 Mar 2026 Fees: 400€/ sem. (semester 1,2) Format: Full-time programme (Part-time student status allowed) Specific information for this programme Requirements Applicants who have successfully completed three years of studies amounting to 180 ECTS (typically a Bachelor in law or equivalent studies) are eligible to apply for the common first year of Master in Law studies at the University of Luxembourg. It offers a variety of courses in European and international law from which students may choose in order to prepare for the specific requirements of the second year. B2 or higher in French and B2 or higher in English. Proof of language skills Applications must include a cover letter, CV, copies of diplomas and transcripts, as well as supporting documents showing evidence of the necessary language skills required to follow the bilingual programme (B2 or higher in French and B2 or higher in English). Applicants should also include at least one but a maximum of two letters of recommendation from their referees. Two names of professors from the University of Luxembourg, who have agreed to be your referees, will suffice for students who have obtained their Bachelor’s degree at our university. Selection procedure & criteria During their first year, students choose the specialisation which they would like to pursue during the second year. Admission to the second year is based on the successful completion of the first year (60 ECTS), as well as the results in the first-year classes relevant to their specialisation.
