Program Overview

Sustainability is an increasingly important topic. Well-trained civil engineers must be able to judge and optimise civil structures and buildings in the context of the growing scarcity of construction materials and energy resources. The double focus of the Master – megastructures and sustainability – sets it apart from other masters in civil engineering. Department of Engineering

Key Program Features

  • International dimension Join an international and multicultural environment and work at the heart of Europe
  • a short train ride away from Paris
  • Brussels
  • Frankfurt
  • etc. Pedagogy You will get a general civil engineer education. Most large universities offer master programmes focusing on one domain of civil engineering. MSCE graduates are generalists
  • meeting the needs of small and large organisations. Furthermore
  • you will join a strong research unit. The MSCE programme is taught by the Departm

Career Opportunities

Study and career opportunities The Master in Civil Engineering Sciences – Megastructure Engineering with Sustainable Resources graduates can work world-wide as civil engineers. Jobs are available in a wide range of structures: engineering consultancies, contractors, dredgers, governmental, and railway organisations. More info Study programme brochure Learning Outcomes A the end of the Master in Civil Engineering Sciences – Megastructure Engineering with Sustainable Resources, students are able to: Analyse complex problems in structural and environmental civil engineering, and plan their resolution Solve complex problems using up-to-date knowledge and design methods Broadly understand several areas of civil engineering and their interrelations Effectively use the design methods in the Eurocodes in standard and non-standard situations, in structural and environmental civil engineering Solve problems not covered by the standard regulations and codes Approach other related knowledge areas and recognise interconnections Work as part of a team or independently Provide detailed and overarching solutions to complex full-scale problems, applying a range of concepts, computational techniques, and engineering methods Function professionally, demonstrate open-mindedness, dynamism, competence, a sense of responsibility, and take leadership if needed Manage risks appropriately, handle failure constructively Develop personal and professional qualities Communicate with diverse construction sector audiences clearly, unambiguously, and exhaustively on engineering and technical solutions, design analysis, conclusions, and the underlying rationale. Study perspectives Graduates from the Master of Science in Civil Engineering – Megastructure Engineering with Sustainable Resources can continue with a PhD in Engineering at the University of Luxembourg. Doctoral Programme in Engineering Sciences Career perspectives Graduates can work as civil engineers in a variety of professional environme

Program Curriculum

Programme As sustainability is becoming increasingly important, MSCE focuses both on megastructures and sustainability, with a curriculum including:– Concrete structures– Steel & composite structure– Engineering surveying– Methods in digital building– Sustainable water and resource management– Analysis of transport systemsAn advanced project in semester 3.Semester 4 is dedicated to a Master thesis. Admissions Academic contents Semester 1 Semester 1 Semester 2 Semester 3 Semester 4 Course offer for Semestre 1 (2026-2027 Winter) Concrete Structures ECTS credits: 5 Course code: MCES-1 Course title: Concrete Structures Number of ECTS: 5 Course code: MCES-1 Module(s): Concrete Structures Language: EN Mandatory: Yes This course aims to provide advanced knowledge on the design of concrete structures. In the first part, design methodologies for serviceability are introduced. Serviceability designs are based on cracking (tension stiffening) and long term deformation). In the second part, methods for ultimate limit states are introduced. Designs of structures based on plasticity theory, strut and tie and stress fields methods are introduced. In the third part, the sustainability assessment and design solutions are proposed to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete structures. The learning outcomes are majorly: 1. The student is able to design concrete structures based on advanced design methodologies for both the serviceability and ultimate limit states. 2. The student knows how to calculate stresses, resistances, deformations of conventional concrete elements. 3. The student is able to calculate the carbon footprint of a concrete structure and propose more sustainable solutions. The course content includes: 1. Introduction and reminder from bachelor courses 2. Serviceability limit state design (Tension stiffening, long term deformation) 3. Ultimate limit state design (Strut and Tie method, plasticity theory) 4. Conceptual design of buildings 5. Sustainability of concrete st
