Program Overview
The course provides an opportunity to look at case studies and develop your own interest in a human society and its relative culture. Whether it's human behaviour, biology, culture and values in a past or present society, you will be encouraged to advance a unique perspective on any aspect of a human demographic. This can range from the environment, race, ethnicity, psychology, food, religion, urban development and medical practices. You will be tasked with writing on your chosen setting at length, which will sharpen your discipline in answering a research question in depth. You are required to write a dissertation based on work of an advanced or original nature and to present your findings and conclusions in a scholarly manner in a dissertation carrying 80 ECTS credits. The main criteria of assessment of the dissertation are: originality in approach or content or a comprehensive and self-supporting study of a theme.
Career Opportunities
As a graduate of the MA in Anthropology (Research), you may enter a career which is related to the area of research which you have followed and written your dissertation on. This may include, archaeology, biological anthropology, medical anthropology, sociocultural anthropology and forensic anthropology, to name a few. You will also be able to work in public, private or non-profit organisations. Roles may include those of conservation, heritage management, sales and marketing, and health and social work. If you would like to further your research or are interested in an academic career, then you may enrol in a doctorate programme offered by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Malta, or at a foreign institution abroad.
Program Curriculum
Year 1 Semester 2 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) ANT5099 * Dissertation 80 ECTS * Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 2 of academic year 2025-26 and continues up to the end of Semester 2 of academic year 2026-27. Semester 1 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) ANT5010 The Research Process 5 ECTS ATS5201 Methods of Research 5 ECTS This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Arts - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must be in possession of: Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with Second Class or better in the same or in a closely related area of study as the area of study applied for,provided that the Board may consider applicants in possession of the Degree with Third Class Honours only if it is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of other qualifications, including relevant experience, obtained following the first cycle degree or the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the same or in a closely related area of study as that applied for, with an average mark of not less than 55% in that area or a degree from this or from another university which the Board considers as comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b) above. This comparability may, in exceptional cases, extend to applicants proposing a research topic which in itself bridges the area of study of the first degree and the one being applied for. In such cases, applicants would be required to attend an interview to assess their suitability, in accordance with procedures established by the Board.
