Program Overview
The Master’s programme in archaeological practice is designed to provide you with advanced practice training based on rigorous theory in archaeology. The M.A. is tailored to make extensive use of archaeological sites and monuments in Malta, one of the richest archaeological landscapes in the Mediterranean. You will be able to address, formulate, and research archaeological problems as well as be trained to tackle and resolve issues involving archaeological resources at risk. This programme gears you towards professional relevance in the field—to prepare professional reports, investigate sites, and to consider legislation and regulations when consulting stakeholders. This M.A. includes a mandatory four-week summer placement. Year 1 Semester 1 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) ARC5008 The Archaeology of Standing Buildings and Structures 5 ECTS ARC5014 Archaeology of Landscapes 10 ECTS ARC5015 Archaeological Resource Management 10 ECTS BLH4005 Research Methods for Cultural Heritage 5 ECTS Semester 2 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) ARC5012 Archaeological Fieldwork Design, Management and Reporting 5 ECTS ARC5013 Artefact Analysis 10 ECTS Elective Units (Elective units are offered subject to availability, a minimum number of student registrations and time-table constraints)Students are required to choose ONE of the below elective study-units. ARC5009 Maritime Archaeology 10 ECTS ARC5010 Osteoarchaeology 10 ECTS ARC5016 GIS for Archaeologists 10 ECTS Summer Period Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) ARC5007 Professional Placement 5 ECTS Year 2 Semester 1 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) ARC5011 Dissertation 30 ECTS This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Arts in Archaeological Practice - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must be in possession of: Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of a first cycle degree in Archaeology, obtained with a Second Class Honours or Category II classification, provided that applicants in possession of a degree with Third Class Honours or Category III shall satisfy the Board through an interview that they are in possession of other qualifications, including relevant experience, obtained following the first cycle degree or a degree from this or from other University, which the Board considers as comparable.
