Program Overview
The M.A. in Global Maritime Archaeology is a programme rooted in archaeological principles and concepts but with special emphasis on the underwater and maritime sub-disciplines. It is especially concerned with human interaction with the sea and other bodies of water, including submerged landscapes and associated physical remains. You will analyse past archaeological reports on complete excavations in the Mediterranean as well as apply post-excavation methods and laboratory techniques to acquire data on maritime heritage. The programme encourages hands-on fieldwork and trains you to characterise and prescribe in-situ conservation techniques to various cultural artefacts situated on the seabed. It will ultimately prepare you to organise exhibitions to submit your findings and detailed reports. Year 1 Semester 1 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) ARC5000 Archaeology and the Sea - Theory and Methods 10 ECTS ARC5001 Archaeology of Maritime Mobility 10 ECTS ARC5003 Power Projection and the Maritime World 10 ECTS Semester 2 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) ARC5002 Conservation and Management of Maritime Cultural Heritage 10 ECTS ARC5004 Manifestations of Maritime Culture: Objects, Voices and Landscapes 10 ECTS Summer Semester Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) ARC5005 Dissertation 30 ECTS ARC5006 Fieldwork 10 ECTS This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Arts in Global Maritime Archaeology - M.A. - under the auspices of the International Collaborative Programmes, offered in collaboration with the Western Australia maritime Museum.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must be in possession of: Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications A first cycle degree in Archaeology, Geography, History, or Oceanography or in another area which the Faculty Board considers as appropriate, obtained with a Second Class (Honours) or Category II classification, provided that applicants in possession of a degree with Third Class (Honours) or Category III shall satisfy the Faculty Board through an interview that they are in possession of other qualifications, including relevant experience, obtained following the first cycle degree. Notes and any other requirements The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 15 students. When the number of places is so limited and the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants shall be selected using the following criteria, the weighting of which shall be published at the time of the call for applications: degree type and class experience in the area of the proposed study and performance during an interview. For the purpose of selection, applicants whose qualifications as stipulated above were obtained by 31 August preceding the commencement of the Course shall be considered first. In exceptional cases, and if vacant places are still available, the University Admissions Board, on the recommendation of the Board, may admit into the Course applicants not in possession of a first cycle degree, provided that it is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of other academic or professional qualifications and experience that together are deemed to be comparable to the level of a first cycle degree. Applicants referred to in this paragraph must satisfy the University’s English Language requirement by presenting a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at the appropriate level, and shall submit with their application a letter giving their motivation for applying for this Course.
