The study and application of health systems management and leadership have become essential elements to managing health care organisations successfully and professionally. Health care systems and organisations are extremely complex to manage and require highly skilled and trained professionals in health management and leadership.Depending on the chosen field for research within Health Systems Management and Leadership, you will be exposed to both the theoretical aspects and models of management, as well as to their practical implications utilising case studies, review of articles, field work and group interaction. Career Opportunities
The Department of Health Systems Management and Leadership has been training and producing managers and leaders in health care for the past 20 years. Many of the senior managers and leaders in the public and private health care sectors have undergone training and instruction through one of the programmes run by the Department. Qualifications in management are a prerequisite for many middle and senior management posts today, therefore, a Master qualification in Health Services Management would provide you with access to management positions, not only in health care but also in other related sectors such as education, social care and in academia. A qualification at Master's level in Health Systems Management and Leadership (by research) provides you with the possibility to continue your studies and research at doctoral level. Several alumni have proceeded to acquire doctoral degrees after completing your master's degree. This allows you to take up an academic or research-oriented career in Malta or abroad.
Program Curriculum
Year 1 Semester 2 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) HSC5111 * Research Methods for Health Care Professionals 10 ECTS HSM5030 ** Dissertation 70 ECTS ** Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 2 of academic year 2025-26 (February 2026) and continue up to the end of Semester 1 of academic year 2028-29 January 2029). * Study-unit HSC5111 starts in Semester 2 of academic year 2025/26 and continues up to the end of Semester 1 of academic year 2026/27. Semester 1 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) HSM5113 *** Designing Effective and Efficient Health Systems 10 ECTS *** Students are required to register for the study-unit either in Year 1 or in Year 2 as directed by the Board. This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must be in possession of: Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) from the Faculty of Health Sciences in an area of study which should be directly related to the area in which the research is to be carried out or a Bachelor's degree obtained with at least a Second Class (Honours) in a discipline deemed by the Board as being closely related to the area of study in which the research is to be carried out or a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) and (b), provided that for the Health Systems Management and Leadership area of study, applicants in possession of a first degree obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) in a discipline deemed by the Board as being related to the area of study in which the research is to be carried out shall be considered as eligible. Notes and any other requirements During the first year of the Course, students may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for work which may bring them in contact with the clinical environment. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.
