Program Overview

The purpose of the postgraduate programme in Mathematics is to consolidate the Mathematical knowledge obtained in the Bachelor's course and of specialising and doing research in select branches of Mathematics. The Course shall be offered in areas of study in which the Faculty can offer expert guidance and supervision and subject to the availability of resources as determined by the Department of Mathematics. You are required to write a dissertation based on work of an advanced or original nature that you will perform during the Course and the presentation of your findings and conclusions in a scholarly manner.

Career Opportunities

As a holder of the M.Sc. in Mathematics, you will be able to enter a career as a mathematician, statistician, operations research analyst, quantitative analyst, actuary and teacher. Access to further studies at doctorate level will also be available.

Program Curriculum

Year 1 Students are required to obtain a total of 90 ECTS credits over a period of 3 Semesters of full-time study mainly taught. Students will be required to register for the study-units as directed by the board. Other study-units may be chosen instead of one M.Sc. study-unit (15 ECTS), as approved and directed by the Board of Studies and upon the recommendation of the principal supervisor. Year (This/these unit/s start/s in Semester 1 and continue/s in Semester 2) Elective Units (Elective units are offered subject to availability, a minimum number of student registrations and time-table constraints) Students are required to choose FOUR study-units to the value of 60 ECTS credits from the following elective pool: MAT5210 Combinatorial Set Theory 15 ECTS MAT5213 General Topology 15 ECTS MAT5216 Extensions and Selections 15 ECTS MAT5313 C* - Algebras: General Theory 15 ECTS MAT5314 Further Topics in Analysis 15 ECTS MAT5413 Algebraic Graph Theory: Graphs, Groups and Reconstruction 15 ECTS MAT5416 Combinatorics of Finite Sets 15 ECTS MAT5417 Selected Topics in Graph Theory 15 ECTS MAT5615 General Relativity 15 ECTS MAT5616 Partial Differential Equations - A Functional Analysis Approach 15 ECTS MAT5713 Finite Element Analysis 15 ECTS MAT5715 Inverse Problems and Applications to Medical Imaging 15 ECTS Other study units may be chosen instead of ONE M.Sc. study unit (15 ECTS), as approved and directed by the Board of Studies and upon the recommendation of the principal supervisor. Summer Semester Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) MAT5003 Dissertation in Mathematics 30 ECTS This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Science.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must be in possession of: Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications the degree of Bachelor of Science with at least Second Class Honours in an area of study deemed by the Board to be relevant to the proposed area of study and obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course or the Bachelor of Science with Third Class Honours in an area of study deemed by the Board to be relevant to the proposed area of study and obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course, provided that the applicants have obtained other qualifications, including relevant experience, following their first cycle degree. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme. The Board, at its discretion, may also recommend the admission of applicants in possession of a Bachelor of Science with at least Category II in an area of study deemed by the Board to be relevant to the proposed area of study and obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course, provided that the admission of such applicants shall be made conditional on the result of an interview and in such cases they shall be required to follow a preparatory programme. The Board, at its discretion, may also recommend the admission of applicants with a first cycle degree deemed by the Board to be relevant to the proposed area of study and obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course, provided that the admission of such applicants may be conditional on the result of an interview and in such cases they may be required to follow a preparatory programme. Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than 10 years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted following an interview to ascertain their capability to follow the Course.
