Program Curriculum

Course Structure

  1. full-time or part-time
  2. minimum program length: 1.5 years
  3. time limit: 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time
  4. Students may complete the MEd program as one of two options below:

  6. program length: 6 sessions full-time or 10 sessions part-time
  7. time limit: 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time
  8. The MA is a research-based degree program.
  9. For admitted students starting in Fall 2014: One required half-course (HSJ1903H: Major Concepts and Issues in Social Justice Education) to be taken in Year 1 of the program.
  10. For admitted students starting in Fall 2014: 2.5 other full-course equivalents (FCEs), of which at least 1.5 must be Social Justice Education (SJE) courses.
  11. Students who are registered in a collaborative program may apply to have their SJE course requirement reduced by 0.5 FCE. Students must consult with their faculty advisor before enrolling in any out-of-department course for which they wish to receive SJE credit.
  12. Additional courses may be required of some students, and some students may be required to take specified courses in research methods and/or theory.
  13. Students complete a thesis which may lay the groundwork for their doctoral research.

Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

The department welcomes applicants with diverse but relevant backgrounds. Applicants are admitted under the General Regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Admission to the MEd program requires an appropriate bachelor\xc2\x92s degree from a recognized university, with standing equivalent to a University of Toronto mid-B or better in the final year. Applicants must have the equivalent of at least 12 months of professional experience.

Applicants are required to submit the following documents. Incomplete applications may be subject to processing delays or rejection:

  • a careful statement of intellectual interests and concerns relevant to the humanities, or social sciences, and social justice education, as well as reasons for undertaking a program in the department, including a statement of preference for one or more faculty members whose research is best matched to the student\xc2\x92s research and/or professional interests

  • two letters of reference, preferably from university instructors with whom the applicant has studied or worked; the second letter of reference may be written by a work- or community-based supervisor

  • a sample of written work that demonstrates engagement with the humanities, or social sciences, and social justice in education

Master of Arts (M.A.)

The department welcomes applicants with diverse but relevant backgrounds. Applicants are admitted under the General Regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Admission to the MA program requires an appropriate bachelor\xc2\x92s degree in a humanities, social science, or cognate discipline from a recognized university, with standing equivalent to a University of Toronto mid-B or better in the final year.
