Program Overview
Mathematics is everywhere - it can be found in the laws of nature, technical developments, modern computer algorithms and even in everyday decisions. In the Mathematics major subject for Secondary School Teaching Degree at KIT, you will acquire a broad foundation in key mathematical areas such as analysis, algebra and geometry, stochastics as well as applied and numerical mathematics. You will learn to analyze abstract problems, recognize structures and develop suitable solution strategies.
However, the study program is not just about arithmetic and proofs: you will also learn how to explain mathematical content in an exciting and understandable way. This includes initial insights into didactics, i.e. the art of teaching. You will practise developing teaching ideas, taking different learning levels into account and using digital tools sensibly. This will prepare you step by step to inspire students for mathematics yourself later on.
The study program is made up of a total of 180 credit points (CP) according to ECTS. These are planned in a standard period of study of 6 semesters, but the actual duration of study can also be longer - the maximum duration of study is 11 semesters.
If you choose Art or Music as one of your major subjects, the duration of your studies will be longer. In this case, you will usually start a year earlier at the respective partner university (Art: Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts - AdBK; Music: University of Music Karlsruhe - HfM)

Career Opportunities
After studying to become a secondary school teacher, there are various career options open to you. Of course, the most obvious path is to work as a teacher at a school. Once you have completed your master's degree, you can apply for an 18-month prepatory service (Referendariat). During this time, you will be employed as a trainee teacher at a school and receive a salary. You will be intensively prepared for your future work as a teacher and gain practical experience in the classroom. After successfully completing your traineeship, you will usually be taken on as a teacher. As a teacher, you can become a civil servant if you meet the necessary requirements such as age limits. You can find out more about the preparatory service on the website of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs.
There are also interesting alternatives to becoming a teacher. For example, you could choose to work in education administration, where you could work in school supervision, curriculum development or other administrative areas of the education system. Another option is to work in research and development. With your expertise, you could work at universities or research institutes to develop educational programs or shape educational policy. If you are interested in the field of educational technology, you could work in companies that develop educational software or operate digital learning platforms.
There are also opportunities outside the education sector. You could work in publishing houses, particularly in teaching materials companies or textbook publishers. You can also find employment in institutions whose field of activity is closely linked to school education, such as branches of ministries of education or foundations, associations and government institutions. The cultural sector or journalism as well as jobs in marketing and public relations also offer possible career prospects for teachers. Depending on your choice of subject, you can also work as an aut
Program Curriculum
The study program is made up of a total of 180 credit points (CP) according to ECTS. These are planned in a standard period of study of 6 semesters, but the actual duration of study can also be longer - the maximum duration of study is 11 semesters.
• two major academic subjects with 78 CP each (subject-specific sciences 70 CP + subject-specific didactics 8 CP)
• Pedagogical Additional Subject including orientation internship (12 CP)
• bachelor's thesis (12 CP)
If you choose Art or Music as one of your major subjects, the duration of your studies will be longer. In this case, you will usually start a year earlier at the respective partner university (Art: Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts - AdBK; Music: University of Music Karlsruhe - HfM)
At KIT, you always apply for two major subjects. You will only be admitted to the Bachelor of Education if you are accepted in both major subjects. If you are admitted in both majors, you will automatically be enrolled in the accompanying Pedagogical Additional Subject studies.
At KIT, you can combine almost all majors. The possible subjects are
• Biology
• Chemistry
• German Literarure
• Geography
• Informatics
• Mathematics
• Natural Sciences and Technology (NwT)1
• Philosophy / Ethics
• Physics
• Sports
• Art (AdBK)
• Music (HfM)
• 1 NwT can only be combined with Biology, Chemistry, Geography or Physics.
• for Informatics and Physics , a combination with Mathematics is recommended. Students who do not follow this recommendation should take supplementary courses in mathematics, as these form an important basis for understanding the two majors.
During your studies, you have various subjects, which consist of one or more modules. A module deals with a specific topic and consists of one or more courses. In the module handbook for your degree program, you will find a description of the modules and their subject assignment as well as a study plan. This gives you an orientation as to which courses you should attend in which semester in order to complete your studies within the standard period of study. It takes into account a balanced distribution of courses over the individual semesters. It also ensures that you are first taught the important basics before moving on to more advanced topics. Your individual course of study may differ from this.
In the Mathematics major, your modules are:
• Linear Algebra 1+2 (18 CP)
• Analysis 1+2 (18 CP)
• Stochastics (8 CP)
• Numerics (8 CP)
• Geometry (8 CP)
• Analysis (7 CP)
• Proseminar (3 CP)
• Subject Didactics Mathematics (8 CP)
