Supplemental Application
MSTP applicants are strongly advised to take the MCAT during the spring and submit medical school applications early in the admissions process, preferably during the summer months. The Supplemental Application may be submitted at any time, but must be received electronically by Nov. 1 by all candidates. The supplemental application provides candidates with the opportunity to indicate a department of interest and their primary research interest.Supporting Documentation
All materials must be received by Nov. 1 for MSTP applicants. This includes your AMCAS application, your medical school supplemental application, and your letters of recommendation. The MSTP requires at least one reference letter, preferably from your most recent mentor, dealing directly with your experiences, abilities and potential as a researcher. The names of all individuals who will provide a letter should be listed on your supplemental application with the most recent experience listed first. Please note: MSTP interviews may not be conducted without all supporting documentation.
Students who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Bioengineering should be aware that the following courses are required prerequisites. If a student does not have evidence on their undergraduate transcript that they have received credit for these courses, they must take them as part of the Ph.D. curriculum. Courses include the Fundamentals of Systems Physiology, Cell Biology and Statistics.
The MSTP also welcomes applications from Baylor medical students in their first or second year or from first-year graduate students.
Medical students at Baylor may choose to apply to the MST Program by notifying the MSTP Administrative Office of their intent, and submitting a one-page letter of interest and a completed Supplemental Application before Nov. 1. They must also participate in all programs and events required of current MSTP students. Following an interview with the director, a decision regarding acceptance will be made at the end of the academic year.
International students must complete their undergraduate training at an accredited U.S. college or university to be eligible to apply to the medical school and the M.D./Ph.D. Program. Students accepted to the M.D./Ph.D. Program must complete both their M.D. and Ph.D. at Baylor College of Medicine. International students who have completed their M.D. in another country and are interested in obtaining a Ph.D. should contact the Graduate School at gradappboss@bcm.edu for more information.
Interviews
Medical Scientist Training Program interviews are conducted October through January, beginning on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. the day before medical school interviews begin. MSTP candidates have two faculty interviews, a director\'s interview and a student interview on Friday morning. These interview sessions provide the opportunity to discuss research experiences and explore various training opportunities available at Baylor College of Medicine. All offers of acceptance to the MSTP are fully funded and will be extended twice during the interview season. The MSTP interviews approximately 75 applicants annually, inviting accepted applicants to return at Baylor\'s expense for an optional Second Look Visit. At this time, applicants have an opportunity to meet faculty members of their choice to discuss research opportunities at Baylor. Candidates will also participate in a student poster session and hear student and faculty presentations about their research.
