From Whom:\xc2\xa0Letters of recommendation should be obtained from college/university faculty members and others who can provide insight into the applicant\'s academic competence.

Coursework Required for Admission Consideration:\xc2\xa0All applicants must present credentials that are the equivalent of the appropriate baccalaureate degree at Temple University. Further, the Pennsylvania Department of Education expects that all individuals seeking teacher certification at the master\'s level, regardless of the discipline, have taken at least 6 credits of college-level mathematics and 6 credits of college-level English composition and literature in their undergraduate program.

Prerequisites for admission to the specialization in Science and Language Arts for Middle Grades Education include undergraduate or graduate level courses, completed with a grade of "C" or better, as identified below:

  • At least eight courses (or 24 credits) each in the chosen concentration areas of\xc2\xa0science\xc2\xa0and\xc2\xa0language arts.
    • For\xc2\xa0science, students are advised to have completed at least one earth/space science, one life science, and one physical science course. One course must include a lab.
    • For\xc2\xa0language arts, students are advised to have completed at least the following courses, of which none may be remedial courses:
      • One course (3 credits) in English composition.
      • One course (3 credits) in American or British literature.
      • Courses that may include composition/writing, linguistics, and/or literature that are not basic or remedial courses.

The Middle Grades Advisor determines which courses count as fulfilling the prerequisites.

Bachelor\'s Degree in Discipline/Related Discipline:\xc2\xa0A bachelor\'s degree is required. Applicants who do not meet the 3.0 UGPA requirement\xc2\xa0may\xc2\xa0be\xc2\xa0considered\xc2\xa0for admission if they meet one of the following exceptions:

  • Standard exception:\xc2\xa03.5 UGPA during the last two years AND a minimum of 3.25 Graduate GPA for 9 credits (typically taken as a non-matriculated student in the program prior to application for admission).

  • Special exception:\xc2\xa0Applicants who do not meet regular admission criteria may be considered for a special exception if a compelling case can be made for admission on the basis of some additional source of data.

  • Statement of Goals:\xc2\xa0In 500 to 1,000 words, outline your interest in seeking a degree with a specific focus on the career to which you aspire, your interests, and your academic and job-related experiences that are relevant to the program.

    Standardized Test Scores:

    Praxis II\xc2\xae: Official score report must demonstrate a passing score in one content-area test to gain admission to the program. The selected test should correspond to one of the applicant\'s two chosen areas of specialization:

    • PA Grades 4\xc2\x968 Subject Concentration: English Language Arts (5156) \xc2\x96 156 minimum score (effective 4/2/12)
    • PA Grades 4\xc2\x968 Subject Concentration: Science (5159) \xc2\x96 156 minimum score (effective 4/2/12)

    TOEFL score (international applicants only): 88 iBT or 575 PBT minimum. Applicants with scores between 88 and 100 iBT or between 575 and 600 PBT must take an English refresher course.
