Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

1. A completed Bachelor\xc2\x92s degree in music or equivalent.

2. A minimum 3.0 (4.0 scale) cumulative grade point average in undergraduate work.

3. Two letters of recommendation by individuals who are familiar with the applicant\xc2\x92s potential for successful graduate study.

4. Requirements pertinent to the student\xc2\x92s intended area of concentrations

Composition: satisfactory sample scores for at least three different types of compositions

Conducting: a successful audition (please see the audition process and requirements for specific performance areas at http://class.georgiasouthern.edu/music/applications/graduate-application/) and a satisfactory agreement with the conducting faculty committee about how the practical conducting will be managed. Generally, full-time students will be assigned to work with various University ensembles; other students may request permission to work with and ensemble (such as a school band or choir) with which they are currently involved.

Music Education: L-4 certification by the State of Georgia or its equivalent.

Music Technology: a statement of purpose and portfolio of previous work in music technology.

Performance: a successful audition (please see the audition process and requirements for specific performance areas at http://class.georgiasouthern.edu/music/applications/graduate-application/).

Additional Admission Requirements
All students will be required to pass the Departmental Graduate Entrance Exam in Music Theory and Music History before proceeding past 12 hours into the degree. These exams are usually given just before the start of each semester
Provisional Admission Requirements
Students may be admitted on a provisional basis if one or more of the requirements listed above are judged to be marginal. Specific provisions for exiting provisional status will be set in each case by the admissions committee and must be satisfied before proceeding past the first 12 semester hours of course work.
