Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
- hold (or be about to receive) an undergraduate degree in music;
- have an acceptable grade point average in all college work taken (at least 3.0);
- depending on specialization, either do an audition or submit an audition audio or video-recording; submit scores and recordings of compositions; submit written samples of scholarship; or submit a 30-minute video-recording demonstrating teaching ability;
- complete entrance examinations in music history and music theory to plan initial course of study;
- achieve acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
- Performance audition for piano faculty
- Accompanying audition for accompanying faculty
- Translation skills in two of French, Italian, and German (may be met with either a diagnostic exam or six hours of undergraduate credit)
- Diction skills and IPA in Italian, French, and German
- Conducting audition or conducting audition videotape
- Keyboard skills for conductors
- Performance audition on primary instrument or voice (PDF: Audition requirements for graduate jazz studies)
- Recordings and scores of three to five of the applicant\xc2\x92s works
- Performance skill on an applied instrument or voice
- Keyboard (may also fulfill performance-skill requirement)
- 30-minute videotape of applicant teaching
- Two research papers of at least five pages in length, one of which is on a music topic (substitutions may be made with approval of program director)
- Two foreign languages from French, German, and Italian (may be met with either a diagnostic exam or six hours of undergraduate credit)
- Audition on primary instrument or voice
- Diction (must take a diagnostic exam)
