Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

Applicants must:
  • hold (or be about to receive) an undergraduate degree in music;
  • have an acceptable grade point average in all college work taken (at least 3.0);
  • depending on specialization, either do an audition or submit an audition audio or video-recording; submit scores and recordings of compositions; submit written samples of scholarship; or submit a 30-minute video-recording demonstrating teaching ability;
  • complete entrance examinations in music history and music theory to plan initial course of study;
  • achieve acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Additional requirements and proficiencies for each specialization:Collaborative piano
  1. Performance audition for piano faculty
  2. Accompanying audition for accompanying faculty
  3. Translation skills in two of French, Italian, and German (may be met with either a diagnostic exam or six hours of undergraduate credit)
  4. Diction skills and IPA in Italian, French, and German
Conducting
  • Conducting audition or conducting audition videotape
  • Keyboard skills for conductors
Jazz studies
  • Performance audition on primary instrument or voice (PDF: Audition requirements for graduate jazz studies)
Music composition/Music composition for contemporary media
  1. Recordings and scores of three to five of the applicant\xc2\x92s works
  2. Performance skill on an applied instrument or voice
  3. Keyboard (may also fulfill performance-skill requirement)
Music education
  • 30-minute videotape of applicant teaching
Musicology
  • Two research papers of at least five pages in length, one of which is on a music topic (substitutions may be made with approval of program director)
  • Two foreign languages from French, German, and Italian (may be met with either a diagnostic exam or six hours of undergraduate credit)
Performance
  • Audition on primary instrument or voice
  • Diction (must take a diagnostic exam)
  • Two foreign languages from French, German, and Italian (may be met with either a diagnostic exam or six hours of undergraduate credit)
