Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

  1. Only applicants who meet the following prerequisites will be considered for admittance:
    • applicants must hold at least a BA or an equivalent qualification in linguistics or a related field from an accredited university. Applicants who have obtained a BA in another field can be considered for admittance provided that they are able to demonstrate an adequate knowledge of linguistics or have sufficient background and experience in the field. Those candidates whose studies are marked by above-average academic performance in linguistics have a strong advantage in the application process;
    • the candidates language skills in English and German must correspond to at least the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Exceptions can be made for prospective students whose language ability in one of the languages is only at the B2 level on the condition that the C1 level has been reached prior to matriculation. In this case, applicants would have the opportunity to enrol in an intensive language course at the University of Freiburg Language Learning Institute. These intensive courses take place during the spring holidays. Applicants must provide evidence of their language ability in the form an internationally accepted certificate unless the language in question is their native language.
