Academic Requirements
Eligibility
Every year we admit up to 30 new students to our M.A. program\nwho come to Bonn with a diverse range of qualifications, training,\nand cultural backgrounds. Successful candidates have completed\nan accredited B.A. program in a field which will provide a solid\nbasis for the M.A. Program in North American Studies. Your degree\nmay be in literary, cultural, or media studies, linguistics, political\nscience, economics, history, or postcolonial studies. Preferably, your\neducational background will include a special attention to North\nAmerica and its cultures or a B.A. thesis with a focus on North\nAmerica.
How To Apply
We admit students in the fall as well as in the spring. You can\napply in May (to enter the program in October) and in December\n(to enter the program in April); a link on our website directs you to\nthe online application portal.\nYour application should include:
- the application form of the University of Bonn
- a notarized copy of your B.A. certificate and diploma supplement.\nIf you are still enrolled in a B.A. program at the time of your application,\nplease submit your current transcript of grades.
- a certified copy of your high school diploma
- a certificate of advanced English language proficiency, documented\nby results of one of the following tests: TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, or\nCPE. We will waive the language requirement for alumni of B.A.\nprograms in English and American Studies and programs entirely\ntaught in English.
- a certificate of intermediate German language proficiency (DSH-1,\nTestDaF TDN 3) if you are an international student. If you opt to\ntake the DSH at the University of Bonn after acceptance into our\nprogram, please state your intent in your application.
English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
