Course Structure

  1. The mission of the Lamar University Department of Nursing is to educate undergraduate and graduate students to become qualified, competent, professional nurses who are prepared for practice. The Department provides quality nursing education relevant to a changing profession, society, and healthcare environment. Collaboration between faculty and students promotes excellence in health care delivery to diverse populations. A spirit of caring, continual inquiry, creativity and integrity is promoted through teaching, scholarship, leadership and service.
  2. Nursing is based on the concepts of moral agency, effective communication including technology, inquiry, and service to the community. The goals of nursing are to provide safe patient/client centered holistic/multi-dimensional care to assist humanity in collaboration with other disciplines in disease prevention, health promotion, health maintenance and restoration, and the support of death with dignity. Nursing emphasizes a spirit of caring, interpersonal communication, critical thinking, clinical reasoning and patient-centered care to contribute to the health of the individual and society. The responsibility of the nurse is to use the nursing process to assist people to meet health care needs, to attain health related goals within legal, ethical, and regulatory parameters to advocate for patients/clients. Nurses use information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, and support decision making to provide competent patient/client-centered care. As members of the profession, nurses collaborate with other disciplines in achieving these goals. The faculty believe in preparing professional nurses with essential competencies in four major roles: Member of the Profession (MOP), Provider of Patient Centered Care (PCC), Patient Safety Advocate (PSA), and Member of the Healthcare Team (MOT).

Application Requirements

For entering freshmen, a complete application packet requires three components.

  1. A completed undergraduateapplication submitted through the statewide Apply Texas system.
  2. An SAT or ACT score sent to Lamar University by the testing agency. Use SAT Code 6360 or ACT Code 4114.
  3. A high school transcript showing class size and class rank. Upon graduation, a final transcript should be submitted showing class rank, date of graduation and graduation plan. Send transcripts to the Admissions Office, P.O. Box 10009, Beaumont TX 77710.
Admission Requirements

To qualify for Unconditional Admission to Lamar University.

  1. Receive a diploma from an accredited high school.
  2. Complete at least 14 high school credits in college preparatory courses: 4 credits in English, 3 credits in mathematics, 2 credits in laboratory sciences, 2 \xc2\xbd credits in social sciences (U.S. history, U.S. government, and world history or world geography) and 2 \xc2\xbd credits in college preparatory electives (preferably including 2 credits of foreign language).
  3. Satisfy requirements of the State of Texas Uniform Admission Policy
  4. Graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class or achieve a minimum composite score on the SAT or ACT.
