Course Structure

  14. An extensive literature review is performed in the autumn term.
  15. The laboratory programme, which is also undertaken largely in the autumn term, lasts for about 50 hours.
  16. During the spring term you undertake a group structural design study. During both terms there is a number of examinable coursework assignments.
  17. After the written examinations in April/May, full-time students undertake a full-time project until the end of September. It is expected that many projects will have significant industrial support and may be partly undertaken in industry, if appropriate. Part-time students are expected to undertake the bulk of their project in industry.

  • Applicants should have been awarded, or expect to be awarded, a First Class (1st) or Upper Second Class (2:1) Honours degree, or equivalent overseas qualification, in engineering, materials science, physics or chemistry.
