Program Curriculum

Course Structure

  1. The first course,\xa0The Field of African Studies, is interdisciplinary and is taught by lecturers from the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences and from the Centre for African Studies. The course covers subjects that are essential to every student studying the African continent, such as demographics, ecology, environment, the history of slavery, colonialism, and modern African politics, as well as economics and literature.
  2. Parallel to this first, quite intensive, block of courses, shared with students from the Research Master African Studies, you follow one more interdisciplinary course\xa0about the imagining of Africa.

Academic Requirements

  • A bachelor\xc2\x92s degree from a university, equivalent to the level of a Dutch academic bachelor\xc2\x92s degree
  • Knowledge, understanding and skills comparable to those acquired upon graduating from the Bachelor\xc2\x92s programme in African Language and Cultures at Leiden University.
  • Applicants should have completed courses worth at least 30\xc2\xa0ECTSin language, literature, culture, history, economics and/or social sciences as related to Africa.

English Proficiency: IELTS 7 or equivalent.
