Degree And Course Requirements

To be considered for admission to the SFU Physics MSc program, applicants should have a bachelor\xc2\x92s degree in Physics or a related subject. Students holding Bachelor of Science degrees in other disciplines may be considered if they have a very strong background (upper level undergraduate courses) in the following core Physics course areas:

  • Quantum Mechanics
  • Statistical Mechanics
  • Electromagnetic Theory

Grade Point Average Requirements

Applicants to the MSc program must have completed 80% of a Bachelor\'s degree with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) equivalent to SFU 3.5 or higher. Information on equivalent academic requirements for international students is available here.

Qualifying Admission

Students who do not meet our minimum course requirements or who have insufficient background in the core Physics courses are welcome to apply to the SFU Physics graduate program. If they are assessed as having the potential for strong graduate performance, they may be recommended for qualifying admission. Please indicate on your application if you are interested in being admitted as a qualifying student.

Application Fee
  • A fee of $90 CDN (for students with Canadian transcripts) or $125 CDN (for students with international transcripts) will apply.
Curriculum Vitae
  • Provide a summary of your research interests, ands lists of your research experience, publications, academic awards and achievements and research skills.
References
  • Applicants must include the names and contact information of three scientists who will provide references supporting their applications. SFU uses an on-line reference system; referees will receive automated emails requesting the submission of on-line recommendations. Referees should contact the Physics Graduate Assistant at physgrad@sfu.ca if they have any questions about the on-line reference process.
  • Identify Prospective Supervisors
If possible, applicants should indicate the top five SFU faculty members with whom they are interested in working in the \xc2\x93Comments\xc2\x94 area of the on-line application form.
  • External Award Holders
Applicants who hold major external awards such as NSERC scholarships should indicate this on their application forms to ensure they are nominated for applicable top-up awards such as the Provost\xc2\x92s Prize of Distinction.
  • Hard Copy Documentation
Official copies of the following should be forwarded directly to the Physics department from the issuing institution or agency:
  • All post-secondary transcripts (transcripts in languages other than English or French must be accompanied by an English or French translation provided by a certified translator)
  • English proficiency examination results, if required (details on SFU\xc2\x92s minimum English requirements for graduate admission are available here--see Graduate General Regulation 1.3.12)
  • Physics GRE test results (recommended for applicants who did not complete degrees at Canadian institutions)
