Academic Requirements
You need the following GPA score:
Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
- The main prerequisite for admission to graduate studies in the Department of Physics is a B.S. degree with a minimum of GPA 3.0 ("B") in Physics courses taken at the undergraduate level. The B.S. course work should include advanced undergraduate courses in Mechanics, Electromagnetics, Modern Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Thermal Physics, and Advanced Laboratory Practice. The Physics Department does not require GRE exam.
- International applicants whose first language is not English or have not completed a College or University degree in the United States or other English-speaking country need to have minimum official scores as set by the UTEP Graduate School on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS.
- Applicants must have completed a B.S. or M.S. degree in Physics or a closely related discipline. Students from other areas might be accepted upon the recommendation of the Departmental Graduate Committee.
