Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

The Post-Baccalaureate Studies program (Post-Bacc Studies) is designed for individuals from a variety of backgrounds and requires no specific prerequisite courses. However, applicants must meet all of the eligibility requirements.

Applicants must hold either a bachelor\'s degree from a regionally accredited US institution. International students should make sure that their degree is the equivalent of a four-year degree in the US. Successful applicants to the program should possess at least a 3.0 grade point average in previous academic work.

The Post-Baccalaureate Studies Admissions Committee considers each program candidate\xc2\x92s application materials holistically, as part of a selective admissions process. In addition to reviewing your academic record and resume, they will evaluate all of your written application materials as a reflection of your academic writing ability.

Post-Baccalaureate Studies program application essays

Your application will include essays addressing the topics listed below. The essays are reviewed as a reflection of your writing ability, and should be well-thought out and polished. Responses should not exceed four pages in length for all the questions combined. (Please compile your responses into a single document, but keep them as separate essays.)

  • Have you ever been placed on probation, dismissed or suspended from any college or university for reasons pertaining to academic integrity? If this does not apply, please write N/A in your response. If yes, please include any facts that you believe bear on the significance of this circumstance.

  • Describe your educational history and background, making sure to address both academic and nonacademic experiences. Please clarify whether your records and transcripts accurately reflect your academic ability. (250 word maximum)

  • Explain your goals for participating in the program, some of the coursework you are interested in and campus resources you plan to utilize. Be as specific as you can about your plans upon completing the program and about your eventual career goals. (250 word maximum)

Letters of recommendation

Letters of recommendation are not required for the Post-Baccalaureate Studies program. However, you may submit up to three letters of recommendation to support your application. These should be from individuals with whom you have had a close professional or academic association and who know of your desire to enroll in the Post-Baccalaureate Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Recommendations may be submitted online (preferred) or by mail. For online recommendations, please follow the instructions in the Recommendations section of the online application.

Standardized test scores

Standardized test scores are not required for admission to the Post-Baccalaureate Studies program.

International applicants whose first language is not English must also submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores to demonstrate English proficiency. If the medium of instruction for your undergraduate degree was English, you may request to waive the TOEFL requirement by sending an email to lps@sas.upenn.edu. The minimum TOEFL scores required for admissions consideration are: 100 (iBT), 250 (CBT) or 600 (PBT). The TOEFL must be sent from ETS using the institutional code 2986.
