Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

A complete application consists of the following documentation:
  • Stony Brook University online application including statement of purpose.
  • Applicants must have an earned baccalaureate degree with a grade point average of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate degree.
  • Three letters of recommendation. These letters should be academic, but consideration will also be given to non-academic letters. Letters are must be uploaded online by the recommender.
  • Transcripts should be uploaded as part of your application. In addition to the upload, two officialtranscripts from each institution you\xc2\x92ve attended (even if a degree was not issued) should be submitted to the department. If you\xc2\x92ve previously attend Stony Brook University, you will not be required to send an official SBU transcript, but are required to upload an unofficial version of the SBU transcript for review purposes.
  • GRE and TOEFL scores reported directly to Stony Brook
  • Proof of Permanent Residency is required for students who declare themselves as Permanent Residents
  • Application fee of $100 (credit Card).
