Academic Requirements

Bio Energy track

A BSc degree corresponding to a minimum 180 ECTS credits in the following fields: Energy Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

Applicants must also document that they have fulfilled the following minimum requirements:

  • Mathematics: 20 ECTS including linear algebra, calculus and differential equations
  • Thermodynamics and heat transfer: 5 ECTS
  • Energy & Environment: 5 ECTS
  • Statistics and dynamics: 5 ECTS
  • Fluid mechanics: 5 ECTS
  • Materials science: 5 ECTS

Moreover, the applicant must have sufficient qualifications within numerical methods and elementary programming using e.g. MATLAB or a similar programming language.

Energy Systems track

A BSc degree corresponding to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits in the engineering field with clear background of energy, economics and mathematics. Applicants that are enrolled in an integrated five year degree with no bachelor level can also apply.

Furthermore, applicants must document that they have fulfilled the following minimum requirements during their previous studies:

  • Mathematics: 20 ECTS including linear algebra, calculus and differential equations
  • Thermodynamics and heat transfer: 5 ECTS
  • Energy & Environment: 5 ECTS
  • Statics and dynamics: 5 ECTS
  • Fluid mechanics: 5 ECTS
  • Industrial Economics: 5 ECTS

Applicants must have sufficient knowledge of numerical methods and basic programming using e.g. MATLAB or a similar programming language.

Geothermal Energy track

A BSc degree corresponding to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits in the following fields: Mechanical Engineering. Applicants that are enrolled in an integrated five year degree with no bachelor level can also apply if they have completed a minimum of three years of Mechanical Engineering studies.

Applicants must document that they have fulfilled the following minimum requirements:

  • Mathematics: 21.5 ECTS including linear algebra, calculus and differential equations
  • Thermodynamics: 6 ECTS
  • Mass and/or heat transfer: 6 ECTS
  • Fluid mechanics: 5 ECTS

The applicant must have sufficient qualifications within numerical methods and elementary programming using e.g. MATLAB or a similar programming language.

Heat and Power Engineering track

A BSc degree corresponding to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits in the following fields: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Physics.

Applicants must document that they have fulfilled the following minimum requirements:

The applicant\xc2\x92s qualifications must include a strong working knowledge of mathematics and energy/thermal engineering. Applicants must document that they have fulfilled the following minimum requirements:

  • Mathematics: 21.5 ECTS including linear algebra, calculus and differential equations
  • Thermodynamics: 6 ECTS
  • Mass and/or heat transfer: 6 ECTS
  • Fluid mechanics: min. 5 ECTS

Solar Cell Systems and Materials track

A BSc degree corresponding to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits in the following fields: Physics or relevant BSc (Physics line), Material Science or Inorganic Chemistry/Chemical Engineering (Materials line).

Applicants must document that they have fulfilled the following minimum requirements:

Both lines
  • Mathematics: 25 ECTS including linear algebra, calculus and differential equations
  • Statistics and probability theory: 5 ECTS

Numerical methods and elementary programming using e.g. MATLAB or a similar programming language

Physics line
  • Physics: 80 ECTS
  • Mathematics and statistics: 60 ECTS

The university courses should cover curricula at a level comparable to that required for admittance to the graduate programme in physics at NTNU. As admission is extremely competitive, applicants should have excellent academic records (minimum B+/upper second/GPA 3.3/4).

Materials line
  • Chemistry: 15 ECTS
  • Thermodynamics: 7.5 ECTS
  • Materials Science: 15 ECTS
  • Mass and heat transfer: 7.5 ECTS
System Integration of Wind Power track

A BSc degree corresponding to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits in the following fields: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other relevant BSc.

Applicants must document that they have fulfilled the following minimum requirements:

  • Mathematics: 25 ECTS including linear algebra, calculus and differential equations
  • Statistics and probability theory: 5 ECTS
  • Electric circuits/Circuit analyses: 5 ECTS
  • Basics in control systems
  • Basics in electrical machines
  • Basics in fluid mechanics

Moreover, the applicant must have sufficient qualifications within numerical methods and elementary programming using e.g. MATLAB or a similar programming language
Students without this qualification must be prepared to complete their curriculum during the first year.
