Program Curriculum

Course Structure

  1. Research Methods:This module is designed to introduce students to advanced empirical research methods in economics and train them to apply these methods to test theories and analyse economic policy problems and governance issues.
  2. Economic Behaviour:The focus of this module is to obtain knowledge in advanced modelling techniques of agents behaviour in different economic situations. Students are introduced to a number of different theories in the field of behavioural economics, they learn to apply empirical research methods (especially experimental methods) and to explore more deeply the factors that drive human behaviour.
  3. Governance:The module concentrates on the field of economic policy and governance issues. Students learn to apply the empirical research methods and theoretical concepts to address questions of economic policy and governance. A special emphasis rests on the application of approaches from behavioural economics and on public choice concepts.
  4. Advanced Topics in Corporate Governance, Consumer Behaviour and Management:Advanced concepts and methods in the field of business administration are the main focus of this module. Students obtain analytical skills in the field of corporate management, consumer behaviour and consumer research.
  5. Seminar in Economic Behaviour:In this module, students have to apply their obtained knowledge on a specific research question in the field of economic behaviour.
  6. Seminar in Governance:In this module, students have to apply their obtained knowledge to a specific problem in the field of governance. The seminars will focus on contemporary challenges in the field of economic policies and governance.
  7. Studium generale:The module provides students with the opportunity to gain insights to theories, concepts and methods of other departments at the University of Kassel. This module is introduced to inspire students to look beyond the scope of economics, develop their personality and broaden their labour market opportunities.
  8. Communication Skills:In this module, students acquire the knowledge and skills to execute and control interpersonal and intercultural communication and interaction.

Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

The prerequisite for the admission to the Master program is a Bachelor\xc2\x92s degree in economics or an equivalent field of studies. Application may also be accepted from graduates with degrees such as Economics and Management, Business Engineering, Business Education, Business Psychology, Business Law, Information Systems, Roman Culture and Business Studies, English and American Culture and Business Studies. Further requirements to enter the program are basic knowledge in economics and/or economic psychology and/or business ethics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics and sufficient knowledge of English.

Requirements for admission:

1) Students have a Bachelor\xc2\x92s degree in Economics, Business Studies or a similar field of study.

2) In their Bachelor studies, students have

  • acquired 210 credit points (ECTS or equivalent) in total.
  • gained profound basic knowledge in the fields of economics and its methods. Specifically, they have passed courses worth (at least)
    • 60 ECTS-credits in Economics, Business Ethics or Economic Psychology
    • 18 ECTS-credits in Mathematics, Statistics or Econometrics.

3) Students have good knowledge of the English language. Non-native speakers are required to have an international language certificate of level B 2 (GER) or equivalent

4) For students who do not fully satisfy the above requirements, the admission committee can admit students but impose additional requirements that have to be fulfilled during the time of study until the completion of the Master thesis.

Please note in particular: Students who acquired only 180 ECTS credits (or equivalent) during their Bachelor studies can be admitted if they fulfill the language requirements and have profound basic knowledge in economics and its methods. During their Master studies, they are required to pass additional courses to make up for 30 ECTS credits.
