Applied Safety and Human Factors in Aviation

Aim
    The aims of this module are to enable students to investigate human factors in flight operations, to identify the issues of system integration, and to develop a safety management system by a scientific approach.
Syllabus

    • Overview of the course, technical writing and communication presentations, environmental issues via group and team working and self-study.

    • Demonstrate ability to integrate E/HF principles and concepts into system interface design including requirements development and validation.

    • Recognise the role and application of HF principles in optimising system performance and safety.

    • Understand the theoretical and practice bases for E/HF relating to physical capabilities and limitations.

    • Utilises a systems approach to the human-centric design of the specification, assessment and acceptance of products, services and human factors interventions.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module you should be able to:

  1. 1. Explore the theoretical frameworks of human factors in aviation.
  2. 2. Identify the role of human performance in a safety-critical environment.
  3. 3. Apply cognitive ergonomics in the system design and system integration.
  4. 4. Practice HCI on the flight deck using augmented/virtual reality devices.
  5. 5. Evaluate the skills and knowledge to improve aviation safety.

    Academic Requirements

    A first or second class UK Honours degree or equivalent in engineering, aeronautical engineering, mathematics, ergonomics, psychology or other science. Other qualifications (e.g. HND or alternative) may be acceptable, provided that there is evidence of sufficient relevant work experience.

    Students requiring a Tier 4 (General) visa must ensure they can meet the English language requirements set out by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and we recommend booking a IELTS for UKVI test.

    English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
