Program Curriculum
Course Structure
- Comparative research questions and theories (9 EC): covering innovative theoretical and empirical advances in comparative research, as well as academic and analytic skills.
- Comparative research methods (15 EC): analysing qualitative and quantitative data of an increasingly complex nature and enhancing your competence, expertise and methodological skills
- Comparative research application (24 EC): courses covering the entire research cycle from beginning to end, integrating theory with methodology.
- Comparative research training (60 EC): research experience consisting of a research project, a thesis, and a scientific journal article.
- Electives or internship (12 EC): courses within or outside the department or at another university, or a research internship either within the Netherlands or abroad.
Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
1. A Bachelor\'s degree in Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Development Studies, Communication Science or another social science. In some instances we also give admittance to students with a Bachelors degree in Political Science, Human Geography, Spatial Planning or another Management Science.
2. English proficiency. Students do not require English language certification if they:
- Are a citizen of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, USA, or South Africa; or
- Have a Dutch Bachelor\'s degree or VWO diploma.
All other students need one of the following certificates (which may not be older than two years):
- A TOEFL score of >=600 (paper based) or >=250 (computer based) or >=100 (internet based)
- An IELTS score of >=7.0
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of C or higher
