Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3.5

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • Masters applicants require an undergraduate Major or Honours degree in Sociology (or equivalent) and a minimum GPA of 3.5 (a B+). Students with an undergraduate degree outside of Sociology may be considered following completion of additional courses equivalent to a Sociology Major or Honours degree.   • PhD applicants require a MA in Sociology (usually with an MA thesis) or equivalent. Students without a MA in Sociology may be considered for entry or may be asked to undertake a qualifying year to complete additional courses with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 (an A-).
  • Applicants should contact relevant faculty members in the Sociology Department to ascertain their availability and their potential interest in becoming a supervisor.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to submit language scores of IELTS band 7.5 or equivalent
  • Applications must include:
      • A statement of interest (600 words) about intended research and why UNB was selected
      • Writing sample (usually a long undergraduate paper or a chapter from their MA)
      • An official academic transcript
      • Three letters of reference
      • A CV
      • A completed application
