Academic Requirements

Application Requirements
For admission to any graduate program in Special Education, applicants must have an instructional certification and meet the minimum GPA requirement (3.0) for their previous coursework as established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, although some exceptions may apply. To be considered for admission to any graduate program in Special Education, applicants must submit the following to the School of Education Graduate Office:
  • A complete application for graduate admission to the School of Education.
  • A statement of purpose demonstrating the applicant\'s Professionalism and Ethics, commitment to Academic Excellence, and commitment to Collaboration and Diversity. For the statement of purpose, the applicant should answer a set of questions framed around these themes.
  • Official transcripts from the accredited college, university or seminary where the applicant obtained a bachelor\'s degree.
  • Along with those documents, applicants to the Additional Certification options in the Special Education- (CBP/HD) program must meet the additional criteria listed below:
  1. An overall 3.0 minimum GPA OR
  2. A minimum 3.0 GPA on the most recent 48 credits
  3. Special Education PreK-8 program applicants: Have an instructional certificate in one of the following: N-3, K-6. PreK-4. Grades 4-8, K-12 (including Music Education, all Foreign Languages, Art, BCIT, Health & Physical Ed majors), Reading Specialist
  4. Special Education 7-12 program applicants: Have and instructional certificate in one of the following: 7-12, K-12 (including Music Education, all Foreign Languages, Art, BCIT, Health & Physical Ed majors), Reading Specialist
  • The Special Education Hearing Impaired, Speech and Language, and Visually Impaired instructional certificates do not qualify as content certificates under both HQT and Chapter 49.85 and therefore certificate holders cannot add the Special Education PreK-8 or 7-12 certificate areas. This program requires a minimum of 33 semester hours, meets the requirements for the degree and certification to teach in special education programs for students with Cognitive, Behavior, Physical/Health Disabilities (CBP/HD) in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in PreK to twelfth grades.

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
