Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Graduate Admission RequirementsAll students seeking degree, endorsement, approval, license or certificate change must be formally admitted to graduate study.A maximum of six graduate credits earned prior to graduate admission may apply to degree requirements.In addition to university admissions requirements in the GVSU Catalog, students must meet the Master of Education (M.Ed.) Admission Criteria.
  • Application Materials: Graduate application, application fee, official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended, and copies of teaching/administrative certificates if required for program admission or approved waiver;
  • Recommendations: Three professional or academic recommendations on COE recommendation forms, addressing the candidate\xc2\x92s potential for graduate study;
  • Grade Point Average: Grade point average of 3.0 or better for the last 60 credits of undergraduate work taken from a regionally accredited institution; or
  • Previous Master\xc2\x92s Degree: A prior master\xc2\x92s degree from a regionally accredited institution will be accepted in lieu of the minimum grade point average.
Candidates should submit materials to GVSU Admissions, Allendale, MI 49401. When all application materials have been received, Admissions will forward the complete portfolio for consideration to the College of Education - Student Information and Services Center. Candidates should allow 4-6 weeks for written notification of their admission status. Additional informationStudents who are degree seeking and are working for special education endorsement are required to take additional courses beyond the normal requirements for the master\xc2\x92s degree. Students who want to enroll in a master\xc2\x92s degree program and are not seeking special education endorsement should select a master\xc2\x92s degree emphasis program and consult with a special education graduate advisor to develop a program consisting of foundations and emphasis coursework, including research applications.
