Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Admission requirements:

Candidates will be selected based on the following three factors:

  • Letters of Recommendation:Two letters of recommendation, one or both of which must be from individuals who have observed you teaching (e.g., student teaching cooperating teacher or University supervisor, principal); the second can be from a former professor who can address your academic potential. Please refer to the application rubric to note what your letter writers should address in their letters. Character references are not appropriate.
  • Personal Statement:This statement should discuss why you want to become a special education teacher and what you feel are your strengths in this area. Also, state why you are pursuing a graduate degree in special education, and discuss any coursework, research, or direct service experiences that you have had that involved individuals with disabilities. Finally, discuss your personal goals in this degree program and any issues and problems that you would like to address in your studies.
  • Interview: Each applicant will meet with program faculty on an individual basis to answer a set of questions pertinent to the graduate degree.

Admissions will be competitive. To apply, students will need to submit the following materials, as noted on the on-line application: (*International students must produce additional information, as specified in the graduate school application materials).

  • A completed application for admission (online only)
  • Application fee of $65.00 (online payment preferred)
  • Personal Statement (included in the online application)
  • Two (2) official college transcripts (sent by the institution). (To apply to the special education program, you must have at least a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, based on a 4-point scale). (These should go to Ms. Marsha Mott).
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation included in the online application
  • If you are claiming RI residency, an official certificate of residency (to Ms. Marsha Mott).

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
