Program Overview

The Photonics Engineering at Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a MSc programme in Engineering over 24 months, delivered On-campus. This programme equips graduates with advanced knowledge and practical skills for professional and academic careers in the field.

Students gain a rigorous grounding in both the theoretical foundations and applied dimensions of engineering. The programme combines coursework, research components, and practical projects that develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and specialist expertise relevant to industry and research needs.

Graduates of the Photonics Engineering programme are well-prepared for careers in academia, industry, government, and the private sector across China and internationally. The programme provides an internationally recognised qualification within the Bologna higher education framework.

Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

Students from DTU

The following bachelor educational programs from DTU give automatically right to acceptance at the graduate program in Photonics.

  • Physics and Nanotechnology
  • Mathematics and Technology
  • Electro technology

However, acceptance to the graduate program is conditioned upon completion of the following courses (or similar courses) during a Bachelor program. If the student has not completed such courses, acceptance to the Master program requieres that the student completes the courses as elective courses during the first part of the Master program.

  • Optics and Photonics
  • Experimental Optics and Photonics
Students from other bachelor programs, as for example Medicin and Technology, Geophysics and Space technology, who would like to attend the master program in photonics, are encouraged to contact the head of studies to define an individual studyplan.

Bachelors from other universities

Bachelors from other universities in Denmark or aboroad with a relevant background for example within

  • Physics
  • Physics and Nanotechnology
  • Applied mathematics
  • Electromagnetism

may be accepted as students at the Master program in Photonics Engineering. However, it is requiered that the student can document basic knowledge within optics and photonics corresponding to having completed the curriculum within the two DTU courses: Optics and Photonics, and Experimental optics.

If curriculum similar to the curriculum in the two courses has not been completed within the bachelor education of the student, he or she may still be accepted within the master program in Photonics engineering, under the assumption that the student complete the two courses immidiately after having started the master studies.

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
