Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Phase I Pre-admission

All documents for Phase I are to be submitted to Graduate Education MEP 263B and must be received in one envelope in order to be considered. No incomplete pre-admission packets will be considered.

  • Submit Supplemental Application. This will initiate a Transcript Evaluation.

  • Transcripts showing completion of a bachelor\'s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale or a GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 30 semester hours of undergraduate study. This GPA requirement applies to both the cumulative GPA and the content area GPA. No exceptions considered due to certification regulations in the state of Kentucky.

  • Current Resume

  • Letter to the reviewer that includes a brief autobiography, a description of life experiences related to the planned certification area, teaching, and other experiences with young children outside the formal educational community other than family members

After you have completed all items from Phase I, you will receive summarized results from your transcript evaluations along with an intent to pursue form. Once the intent form is returned, you will be scheduled for a panel interview with an on-demand written essay.

Pre-admission applicants will received written notification of the MAT admission committee\'s preliminary decision. Those receiving a positive recommendation will be given the the detailed results of their evaluation indicating any additional undergraduate content courses needed. Once the coursework is near completion, the candidate should then move to Phase II.

Phase II Application and Admission

All documents for Phase II are to be submitted to Office of Graduate Programs AC302.

  • Official Transcripts from all institutions attended sent directly from the universities
  • Submit three (3) recommendation forms from individuals who can attest to the candidate\xc2\x92s potential for teaching. Recommendation letters submitted without the recommendation form will not be accepted.
  • A criminal and federal background check, Certified Background
  • Completion of appropriate Praxis II content exam(s) with the minimum score required by the state of Kentucky.
  • Successful completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Core Academic Skills for Education assessments of basic knowledge administered by the Educational Testing Services.
    • GRE scores required:
      • Verbal with a minimum score of 150;
      • Quantitative with a minimum score of 143; and
      • Analytical Writing with a minimum score of 4.0
    • Core Academic Skills for Education scores required:
      • Reading minimum qualifying score of 156
      • Writingm minimum qualifying score of 162
      • Mathematics minimum qualifying score of 150
  • Receive admission approval from the Teacher Education Committee
