Program Curriculum

English/Language Arts (ELA), Grades 7-12: This program prepares teacher students to earn an English/Language Arts teacher certification that addresses all the necessary knowledge and skills that well-prepared secondary ELA teachers need to teach coursework addressing Michigan ELA Standards for grades 7-12.

The M.A.T program is offered as a master's Plan B or C and requires a minimum of thirty (30 credits. Total credit requirements vary based on the applicant's background in his/her teaching field at the undergraduate level and specialized requirements. Mathematics, Grades 7-12: This program prepares teacher students to earn a mathematics teacher certification that addresses all the necessary knowledge and skills that well-prepared secondary mathematics teachers need to teach coursework addressing Michigan Mathematics Standards for grades 7-12.

Science, Grades 7-12: This program prepares students to earn a broad science teacher certification that addresses all the necessary knowledge and skills that well-prepared science teachers need to teach coursework addressing Michigan Science Standards for grades 7-12. This certification prepares students to teach biology, chemistry, physics, and earth/space science. The program includes the three dimensions of Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices, and Cross-Cutting Concepts across the disciplines of Life Science, Physical Science, Earth and Space Science, and Engineering Design and Technology

Social Studies, Grades 7-12: This program prepares teacher students to earn a broad social studies teacher certification that addresses all the necessary knowledge and skills that well-prepared social studies teachers need to teach coursework addressing Michigan Science Standards for grades 7-12. This certification prepares students to teach history, civics, geography, and economics.

Academic Requirements

To be considered for the M.A.T. program in Secondary School Science, applicants must present evidence of:

  • A bachelor\xc2\x92s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • An overall honor point average of 2.75 or higher and at least a 3.0 honor point average in the science major.

  • An undergraduate major in science and a minor in another certifiable content area; and

  • Successful completion of the State Basic Skills Exam.

Admission to the Master of Education program is contingent upon admission to the graduate school. Applications for the Master of Education Degree are in the Academic Services Office, Room 489 Education.

English Proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
