Academic Requirements

International Student

Step 1: complete an online application

Complete the online application. You will need to create an account name and password before you can proceed with the application.

Step 2: Pay The $40 Application Fee

The fee should be paid at the time of the application, but if you do not have the means to pay it when you fill out the application online, you can always go back and pay it later as long as you have your account ID and password.

Step 3: Submit Your Official Transcripts
Official transcripts from all years of high school must be sent directly to International Student and Scholar Services by the student\xc2\x92s current or previous educational institutions. If your current or previous high school cannot send your transcripts directly to us, they can provide official documents to you in a sealed and stamped envelope. If transcripts are not in English, you must provide certified translations.
Step 4: Submit Your Test Scores
Your score reports must be sent directly to Northern Kentucky University. The minimum scores for admission to undergraduate programs are below. Keep in mind that you only need to submit ONE of the following:
  • TOEFL: 79 IBT or 550 PBT
  • IELTS: 6.5 band or higher with a minimum of a 5 in reading and 5 in writing
If you do not meet Northern Kentucky University\xc2\x92s English proficiency requirement, you may be given a conditional admission to a degree program but you will need to first attend the American English Language Program at NKU until you pass the English proficiency requirement.
Step 5: Show Proof of Financial Support

In order to receive the I-20 form, which you will show at the consulate, you must prove that you can pay the 9 months cost of attendance at NKU, which is currently $25,174 for non-Business programs and $28,054 for Business programs (summer not included). A bank statement from your sponsor must be submitted to us. The statement must not be older than 3 months and should be official and signed by the bank. In addition, you will need to complete the Financial Agreement Form and mail it all together with your other documents to International Student & Scholar Services.

If dependents (son, daughter, wife or husband) will accompany you while you are studying at NKU, you will need an additional $5000 for your spouse and or $3000 for each child that you bring with you. You will need to submit the Dependent Form along with the financial agreement form.

Step 6: Mailing Documents
Please mail all your documents, including a copy of your passport ID page to International Student & Scholar Services.
