The African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control, now evolved into the Expanded Special Project for the Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (ESPEN), has supported training fellowships for African scientists and health workers in epidemiological surveillance, community-directed treatment, and disease modelling for neglected tropical diseases. ESPEN continues to support fellowship placements at WHO AFRO and partner institutions for NTD programme managers from endemic African countries. Fellows gain skills in disease data management, community engagement, and elimination strategy design.
