The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the United States who have faced and overcome significant personal hardships and adversity. The National Scholarship provides $25,000 to outstanding students from lower-income backgrounds with strong academic records. The programme recognises that resilience and perseverance are as important as grades in predicting success. Additional state scholarships and career and technical education scholarships are available. The association's network of members provides mentoring for scholars.
