The Government of Trinidad and Tobago administers the National Scholarship (Open) and the National Scholarship (Open Competitive) for exceptional students to pursue undergraduate study at top universities in the UK, Canada, the US, and regionally. The scholarship covers full tuition, return airfare, and a monthly allowance. Competition is extremely intense with only a handful of awards annually; scholars typically have among the best school leaving examination results in the country. T&T also operates the Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses (GATE) programme providing free tertiary education domestically.
