Course Structure
- The master\x92s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology requires a total of 34 units of elective graduate study as determined by the student\x92s Advisory Committee.
- Candidates are required to complete a thesis based on original research.\\
- Fourteen or more course units must be taken in biochemistry and molecular biology; eight units may be pursued outside the department and, upon approval, a maximum of 10 units of directed research in biochemistry will be applied to the degree.
- Students are required to maintain a 3.0 minimum grade point average.
- Master of Science candidates have the option to complete a research thesis or a non-research based theoretical thesis.

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
- Bachelor\xc2\x92s degree in one of the natural sciences.
- A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0.
- Satisfactory passes on the general portion of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). GRE Subject (advanced) examination are desirable but optional.
- Undergraduate course work in organic chemistry, physics and mathematics are required. General courses in the biological sciences, including biology, genetics, developmental biology or cell biology are recommended.
- At least one semester of undergraduate biochemistry or molecular biology is also required for both degrees.
- Previous course work in physical chemistry is strongly recommended.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the English language (e.g. TOEFL) is required. However, candidates with special circumstances may be considered for conditional admission.
