Program Overview

Civil Engineering is a minimum three-year-long research-centred programme for those interested in the practical application of the principles of the natural and physical sciences to real-world issues.

The goal of this programme is to provide you with academic training and prepare you for scholarly work, including teaching at university or holding specialist positions at research institutions, as well as other demanding responsible positions in society.

1. Knowledge and understanding:

1.1. The student has gained extensive and detailed knowledge of the main theories, fundamental aspects, concepts and of the newest knowledge in a chosen area in the field of civil engineering. The knowledge is significantly deeper than that which he gained at previous levels.

1.2. The student has adopted innovative and critical thinking in his research activities and can present and develop theoretical concepts.

1.3. The student understands the nature of scientific research and knows the rights and obligations of the scientist, including aspects relating to confidentiality, copyright, ethics and intellectual property rights of results and data.


2. Type of knowledge:

2.1. The student is an expert in the field he has researched and his research is considered a significant contribution to the research field in question.

2.2. The student has taken the initiative in creating new knowledge and in interpreting this knowledge with research that has withstood inspection and review by academics in the field in question.

2.3. The student has performed individual research and can work independently on complex research projects.

3. Practical competence

3.1. The student knows the systems used to finance research and how evaluations are performed and he understands how research is leveraged both for academic and business purposes.

3.2. The student knows how to implement a research project by setting research goals and milestones and by prioritising activities.

3.3. The student can apply both general and specialised research tools that are used in his area of research and in related fields.


4. Theoretical skills:

4.1. The student can organise his own study of specified subjects and apply the appropriate research methods and academic theories.

4.2. The student can gather appropriate information from research and from other data sources and can use information technology to work with information, recorded it and present it systematically.

4.3. The student can write well-organised academic papers that are of such quality that they are accepted for publication in recognised international academic journals.


5. Communication competence

5.1. The student can effectively present his area of specialisation to his peers, to academics and to the public.

5.2. The student can work with others in a team and have productive cooperation with advisors, peers and colleagues in his institution and in the wider academic community, cooperation that includes critical discourse and exchange of views on academic issues.

5.3. The student can argue in favour of his research orally in seminars or in oral examinations and can explain and defend his research for the boards of research funds.

5.4. The student has shown professional independence and initiative and can accept responsibility for his own work, manage and shoulder responsibility for the work of others and inform and teach others about research methods and about academic matters.


6. General academic competence

6.1. The student has adopted willingness and gained the competence to learn and gather knowledge, while appraising all knowledge in a critical manner and with an open mind.

6.2. The student's search for knowledge is driven from within, it is disciplined, thorough and characterised by an awareness of the limitations of his knowledge. He is confident and shows initiative in his research work.

Program Curriculum

A three-year academic and applied research-oriented graduate programme in civil engineering at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences of the University of Iceland. The programme consists of 180 credits research project. Admission requirements are a research oriented MS degree or equivalent. Graduates from related disciplines can be admitted on fulfilling supplementary requirements.

Admission Requirements

A MS degree in engineering or equivalent.

An exemption may be granted to applicants who have completed 90-120 ECTS studies at level 6.1, with a research project worth fewer than 30 ECTS, provided that they include in their application an account of research experience which the standing committee deems equivalent to a 30 ECTS research project.

Three year program. 180 credits are required for the Ph.D. dissertation. The doctoral programme is primarily based on the doctoral candidate's independent research, culminating in the dissertation. However, the Ph.D. committee may require the candidate to take courses in addition to the research. Credits for courses are then added to the credits required for the dissertation.
