The Master in Secondary Education has been designed for students who hold a Bachelor degree in French Studies (langue et littérature françaises) wish to qualify as secondary school teachers.

Career opportunities The Master in Secondary Education prepares students for a teaching career in secondary schools in Luxembourg. Students can also continue their studies at PhD level and enrol in one of the University’s doctoral schools. More info Download the flyer Objectives Students deepen their knowledge in French literature and linguistics and develop the pedagogical skills needed to teach in classroom settings. The study programme is structured around three complementary axes: disciplinary specialisation courses professional didactics courses general professional courses To obtain the degree of Master in Secondary Education, students have to submit a Master’s thesis. The topic may be related to the disciplinary courses in line with the study programme (literature, didactics, linguistics, cultural studies, … ). Students have to complete two three-week internships in secondary schools. The programme organises a preparatory seminar to introduce students to the French culture in Luxembourg. Together with IFEN a study day on current issues of teaching French in Luxembourg is organised to encourage the exchange between teaching practitioners and researchers in didactics. Learning outcomes At the end of the programme, students are able to freely apply methods and theories of literary studies as well as linguistics, adapt their deep knowledge of the subject of French Studies for the needs of the classroom, develop and apply teaching strategies to engage and motivate students, use didactic strategies and techniques to plan, organise and structure lessons in an effective way, demonstrate their competencies in managing multilingualism and multiculturalism effectively in the classroom, communicate accurately and effectively with students, parents and colleagues. Programme The French Studies track takes into account the linguistic and socio-cultural specificities of French teaching, and proposes both a disciplinary specialisation and didactic approaches in accordance with the curricular progressions in secondary education in Luxembourg. Admissions Academic Contents Semester 1 Semester 1 Semester 2 Semester 3 Semester 4 Course offer for Langue et littérature française, Semestre 1 (2026-2027 Winter) De la phrase au texte ECTS credits: 4 Course code: F3_SECEDUC-239 Course title: De la phrase au texte Number of ECTS: 4 Course code: F3_SECEDUC-239 Module(s): Langue française et interpretation des textes Language: FR Mandatory: Yes – L’étudiant.e doit être capable d’analyser les composantes intraphrastiques (syntagmes) et de maîtriser l’analyse logique de la phrase complexe en propositions + Notions de grammaire textuelle.– L’étudiant.e doit maîtriser toutes les catégories morphosyntaxiques (natures). Tests d’identification.– L’étudiant.e doit maîtriser les principales fonctions syntaxiques (Sujet, C. d’objet, Attribut du Sujet et du COD, C. Circonstanciels, C. d’agent, apposition, C. de détermination du Nom et de l’adjectif, fonction épithète) par l’application de tests.– L’étudiant.e doit maîtriser l’analyse de la phrase (simple, complexe, différents types de propositions, types de subordonnées)– L’étudiant.e doit connaître les notions de grammaire textuelle abordées dans le cours. Ce cours est conçu comme une mise à niveau et une mise en perspective critique des savoirs grammaticaux des étudiant.e.s en vue de l’épreuve de grammaire du concours de l’enseignement secondaire.Il traitera des notions de nature et de fonction, de proposition, de la phrase simple et de la phrase complexe. Il abordera quelques notions de grammaire textuelle.L’analyse portera sur des extraits littéraires, des exercices d’appropriation et des sujets d’annales des concours. Admission Requirements
Admissions To apply for a programme at the University of Luxembourg, candidates must comply with the general eligibility criteria for the chosen programme type and be selected by the study programme based on the quality of their application. The programme at a glance – 120 ECTS Duration: 2 years / 4 sem Teaching languages: FR + DE + EN Admissions: EU: 1 Feb 2026 – 15 Jul 2026 Non-EU: 1 Feb 2026 – 24 Mar 2026 Fees: 400€/ sem. (semester 1,2,3,4) Format: Full-time programme (Part-time student status allowed) Specific information for this programme Requirements Bachelor degree or equivalent (180 ECTS) in French studies (langue et littérature françaises) Language requirements: French C1 level (CEFR), German B1 level (CEFR), English B1 level (CEFR). The required language skills can be demonstrated by a formal test, a diploma required for the enrolment at the University of Luxembourg (cf. Abitur / Baccalauréat) and / or a personal interview with the study programme director. More information on proof of language skills In addition to the documents required for the enrolment at the University of Luxembourg, students need to submit the following documents: – a CV – a letter of motivation These documents should clearly address the following points: – previous academic background in line with the Master in Secondary Education and the chosen disciplinary track– expectations of the study programme– personal (professional, academic…) objectives – the reason for choosing this particular study programme. Selection procedure & criteria Selection is based on the application documents. Admission is limited to 35 students for each track.A personal interview with the respective study programme directors may be requested.
