Devoted to excellence, the track General Mathematics provides a high level of mathematical training in new techniques and concepts. It can be tailored to individual interests through a large choice of optional courses from disciplines such as Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, Probability Theory and Statistics. Programme The General Mathematics track of the Master in Mathematics is a two-year programme taught in English, featuring core and optional courses, including project work and seminar-style presentations.Students can choose courses from algebra, number theory, geometry, probability, statistics and others.New students are requested to take the Refresher Courses scheduled before the start of the first semester. Admissions Academic Contents Semester 1 Semester 1 Semester 2 Semester 3 Semester 4 Course offer for General Mathematics , Semestre 1 (2026-2027 Winter) Commutative Algebra ECTS credits: 8 Course code: F1_MA_MAT_GM-1 Course title: Commutative Algebra Number of ECTS: 8 Course code: F1_MA_MAT_GM-1 Module(s): General Mathematics 1 (30 ECTS) Language: EN Mandatory: Yes Learn the concepts of commutative algebra in relation to applications in algebraic number theory, algebraic geometry and other fields of mathematics. The successful students possesses deepened and extended knowledge of the topics treated in Commutative Algebra. In number theory one is naturally led to study more general numbers than just the classical integers and, thus, to introduce the concept of integral elements in number fields. The rings of integers in number fields have certain very beautiful properties (such as the unique factorisation of ideals) which characterise them as Dedekind rings. Parallelly, in geometry one studies affine varieties through their coordinate rings. It turns out that the coordinate ring of a curve is a Dedekind ring if and only if the curve is non-singular (e.g. has no self-intersection).With this in mind, we shall work towards the concept and the characterisation of Dedekind rings. Along the way, we shall introduce and demonstrate through examples basic concepts of algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory. Admission Requirements
Admissions To apply for a programme at the University of Luxembourg, candidates must comply with the general eligibility criteria for the chosen programme type and be selected by the study programme based on the quality of their application. (semester 1,2,3,4) Format: Full-time programme (Part-time student status allowed) Dates coming soon Specific information for this programme Requirements Diverse academic backgrounds will be considered, as long as a strong mathematical background is demonstrated, such as:• Bachelor in Mathematics (at least 180 ECTS) or similar,• Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Natural Sciences (at least 180 ECTS) with strong mathematics component demonstrated by a substantial choice of modules and very good performance. They are selected based on academic merit, on their application file and, in particular cases, on an interview. Applications / Re-registrations must include the four Master in Mathematics semesters. Admissions for the second or third semester onwards are only accepted in exceptional cases when the classes taken abroad are comparable to those taught during the first and second semesters at the University of Luxembourg.
