Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

The student may be admitted to candidacy for the MA - Mexican American Studies by complying with the requirements of the university, as outlined in the Academic Requirements section of this catalog. The University requires that all graduate students demonstrate competency in written English as a condition for advancement to candidacy. Please refer to the SJSU catalog section titled "Competency in Written English" for details. For graduate courses that meet the competency in written English requirement for MAS, please refer to the Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations website at www.sjsu.edu/gape. In addition, the students must have earned a 3.0 grade point average in all course work completed in graduate standing on or off campus.With the counsel of one or more members of the department and graduate advisor, the applicant will develop an official master\'s degree program using the university Candidacy Form, which is submitted along with an explanatory memo to the graduate advisor and the faculty for approval. After departmental approval, this program must be approved by the Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research.
