Academic Requirements
You need the following GPA score:
Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
International Graduate students:
- Permanent Residents: Copy of Alien Registration card/Legal Permanent Resident card.
- Financial Statement of Responsibility for students needing an F1 or J1 visa

Admission Requirements
Eastern Michigan University\'s General Graduate School Admission Requirements
Applicants must have earned a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution.A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program. Some departments require higher minimum GPAs; see specific program requirements. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission.
All prospective Graduate students should submit:
- Completed graduate application
- Application fee ($45)
- Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities (EMU alums do no need to request official transcripts).
Additional requirements, such as standardized test scores, letters of recommendations, department applications or teacher certification, are determined by each academic department. See program requirements noted in the Graduate Catalog.
Students with non-U.S. post-secondary credentials must submit an evaluation of their international transcripts from the Educational Perspectives (EP) credential evaluation service.
Applicants must:
- Meet the Graduate School admission requirements;
- Have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0; if the GPA is below 3.0, applicant should contact the graduate coordinator, who may request that the student attain a score at the 60th percentile on the GRE. A GRE score is not required if the GPA is 3.0 or above;
- Have completed the following prerequisite courses or their equivalent, having earned at least a B in the course*: Quantitative Applications in Sociology ; Methods in Sociological Research; Modern Sociological Theory ; Applicants lacking one or more of the three prerequisite courses listed above may be granted a conditional admission. Credit earned for these courses will not be applied to their degree credits.
- Submit a two-to-three-page personal statement, highlighting the manner in which past academic, employment, volunteer or other relevant personal experiences have shaped their interest in a master\xc2\x92s degree in sociology. Applicants should also discuss the manner in which this degree will enhance their future career plans; and
- Submit two letters of reference, from either academic or employment sources.
