Academic Requirements

Admission decisions will be based upon consideration of several factors including letters of recommendation, courses previously taken, G.P.A., GRE scores, and the number of places available in the program. The GMAT will not be accepted as a substitute for the GRE.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR ADMISSION INTO THE M.S. STATISTICS PROGRAM, AN APPLICANT MUST DEMONSTRATE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • A bachelor\'s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Evidence of strong performance in the following courses:
  • Calculus
  • Calculus-based probability
  • Introductory statistics (including the basics of statistical inference: sampling distributions, hypothesis testing, and confidence intervals)
  • Linear algebra
  • An ideal candidate will also have had a course in mathematical statistics (at the level of a textbook such as Wackerly, Mendenhall and Scheaffer, Mathematical Statistics with Applications)
  • Acceptable performance on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • A personal statement discussing the reasons for pursuing graduate study, academic and professional interests and goals, intellectual preparedness of the applicant to undertake graduate studies in statistics, and special circumstances in an applicant\'s background that might indicate the potential for success in a graduate statistics program
  • Letters of recommendation, preferably written by those who are familiar with the applicant\'s academic qualifications
  • English proficiency
