The Pacific Community (SPC) based in Noumea, New Caledonia, supports Pacific Island nations in developing fisheries management capacity through scholarships, training, and technical assistance. The SPC Fisheries Science and Management Fellowship supports Pacific Islanders to access postgraduate training in fisheries science, marine resource management, and aquaculture. Scholarships fund study at Pacific universities or overseas at institutions in New Zealand, Australia, or Japan. The programme strengthens the capacity of Pacific Island governments to sustainably manage their exclusive economic zones, which together represent the world's largest oceanic territory.
