Stockholm University of the Arts (Swedish: Stockholms konstnärliga högskola) is a public university college created on January 1, 2014 when DOCH University of Dance and Circus, the University College of Opera, and Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts merged to create a leading international education and research environment.
Fields of Study
SKH offers education and research within the fields of Circus, Dance, Film and Media, Opera and Theatre. Additional areas include dance pedagogy, performing arts and acting.
Historical Significance
SKH is both one of the oldest higher education institutions in Stockholm and one of the youngest—the merger reunited training academies that started 250 years ago.
Research Excellence
SKH is at the forefront of artistic research in Sweden and in 2016 became the first artistic research institution in Sweden to start admitting doctoral students. There are currently over 20 doctoral students, over 50 ongoing research projects, several recurring conferences, and a research journal called VIS – Nordic Journal for Artistic Research.
Programs & Students
There are currently around 500 students at SKH. Many programmes are only available here nationally, and some are unique in the whole world—narrow specialist programmes on the international cutting edge. The university offers bachelor's programs (3-5 years), one-year and two-year master's programs, and doctoral studies (4 years full-time with employment).
Unique Features
SKH looks at circus as an art form and offers educational programmes, courses and research in circus, with doctoral students and research teachers generating new knowledge in artistic research. The circus education constitutes an international environment with students and teachers from all over the world, and programmes are given in English.
Future Plans
SKH is aiming to move into a single, joint building from 2030, where all art forms are invited to both further specialize and collaborate.
