About The University of Winchester

The University of Winchester is a public research university based in the city of Winchester, Hampshire, England. The university has origins tracing back to 1840 as a teacher training college, but was established as a university in 2005. Winchester University is a member of The Cathedrals Group — the Council of Church Universities and Colleges (CCUC) — a network of universities and colleges in the United Kingdom. The university graduates its students at Winchester Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, and following graduation, students are eligible to use the post-nominal title "Winton", derived from the Latin Wintoniensis, meaning "of Winchester."

Campuses & Facilities

The university's campus is divided into four quarters: the King Alfred Quarter (the main campus close to Winchester city centre), the Medecroft Quarter (extra learning facilities just off the main campus), the Bar End Quarter (sports facilities), and the West Downs Quarter (home to the Winchester Business School).

The West Downs Centre, which opened in September 2020, provides state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, a new library, a gallery, multiple shops and cafes, a variety of social learning spaces, and a 250-seat drum-shaped auditorium, and is also home to the university's computer and digital-related degree programmes.

The newly refurbished Martial Rose Library houses over 300,000 books as well as a large digital library. All university halls of residence are within walking distance of teaching buildings, the Students' Union, and Winchester city centre.
